There may be confusion around abortion laws in your state after the 2024 election. We want to share three things you will want to know about Neabraska’s abortion laws in 2024, including abortion restrictions like the 12-week ban.

1. The 12-Week Abortion Ban in Nebraska

In Nebraska, as of 2024, abortion was banned after 12 weeks of pregnancy. The law banning abortion after 12 weeks, LB 574, was signed by Gov. Jim Pillen (R) on May 22, 2023. After the 2024 election, this abortion law remains in effect.

It’s important to note that the FDA only recommends the abortion pill (medical abortion) for women through 10 weeks of pregnancy.

2. Abortion Ban Exceptions

There are a couple of abortion ban exceptions with the 12-week abortion ban in Nebraska. Exceptions that may allow you to get an abortion in Nebraska after 12 weeks include the following:

  • Saving the life of the mother
  • To prevent serious risk to the physical health of the mother
  • If the pregnancy is a result of rape and/or incest

3. Treatment for Miscarriage & Ectopic Pregnancy

Your safety is important and should be a priority. Even with the 12-week abortion restrictions in the state of Nebraska, it’s vital to understand that state laws are NOT forcing women to continue with a non-viable pregnancy that would harm a woman if not medically treated (not an abortion).

You have full permission to seek medical care if needed if you’re experiencing complications. You do not have to be afraid to visit your doctor, as they must do what they can to safeguard your health and use treatment if needed.
